The book I chose to read was Elements of Graphic Design by Alex W. White. I chose to focus on the chapter that emphasizes on the importance achieving visual unity and harmony in graphic design. The author stresses the importance of making elements work together in the best interest of the reader by using the following quote:
“The minimal requirement in visual design is the organization of all parts into a unified whole. All the parts, no matter how disparate, must be reconciled so they support each other.”
So how does one achieve the goal of unity and harmony?
To achieve the overall goal of unity one must demonstrate their understanding similarity and contrast. He states that the most well-designed documents exhibit great uses of dramatic contracts, careful similarities, on top of a great, thought out idea.
Through out the chapter the author also lays out crucial points in creating a unified, harmonious design such as keeping the idea simple, using a grid system, manipulating text and images to create unity and express continuity from page to page by creating equal spaces between elements and indents. By understanding these specific elements and ideas on graphic design it allows one to grow as an artist and develop creativity and enable one to better depict a clear message.
